After two successful seasons, AMC has decided it’s not ready to say goodbye to one of its most lucrative franchises, and has given the go-ahead forThe Walking Dead: Dead CitySeason 3. Premiering back in 2023, the spinoff series stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohen as fan favorites Maggie and Negan, and takes place in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan that’s been isolated from the mainland and sees different factions jockeying for control.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, AMC has officially ordered a third season ofThe Walking Dead: Dead City, which will begin shooting this fall in Boston. The catch is that the current showrunner, Eli Jorné, will be replaced by Seth Hoffman, who served as a writer and co-executive produceron the flagship series. In a statement released yesterday, he said he couldn’t be more thrilled to be back, and is eager to get to work on the next chapter of the popular spinoff:

“I’m excited to have the chance to dive back intoThe Walking Deaduniverse and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise. It’s a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan’s iconic adventures inDead City. Lauren, Jeffrey and Scott [Gimple] are incredible creative partners and I’m thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this story to life.”
10 Major ‘Walking Dead’ Comics Moments That Never Made It Into the Show
Some of the greatest moments from ‘The Walking Dead’ comic have been distorted beyond recognition or completely left out of the show.
“We’re thankful to Eli Jorné for two seasons ofDead Citythat took the story of these iconic characters in exciting new directions and broadened this thriving universe by introducing a new corner of the walker apocalypse,” added president of AMC Networks entertainment and AMC Studios, Dan McDermott. “As we continue to create new stories for a passionateTWDfanbase, we’re delighted to have a seasonedWalking Deadveteran like Seth Hoffman at the helm of a new season, alongside the remarkable Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that will bring new adversaries and alliances and push the boundaries of Maggie and Negan’s conflicted relationship.”

Finishing its second season run on June 22, the finale ofDead Citysaw Negan put an end to the ruthless newcomer known as Bruegel (Kim Coates), much in the same wayhe ended the lives of Glenn and Abrahammany years ago. Afterward, Maggie had the perfect opportunity to finally get her revenge and kill Negan, but instead she decided to put away her long-standing grudge in favor of moving forward and not hanging on to the past. While it’s too early to get into the nitty-gritty of what comes next, AMC has at least given fans a taste of what the future holds by releasing a brief synopsis forDead CitySeason 3:
“Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: Have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?”

There’s no word yet on when Season 3 will premiere, but given the fact that it begins production in the fall, we could see it return as early as next year. We’ll have more news as things progress, but in the meantime, you can stream the first two seasons ofThe Walking Dead: Dead Cityon AMC+.
