Although more story-focused, you’ll still face several enemies inSouth of Midnight. Over time, if you gather enough Floofs, you should be able to max out all the skill trees. Only a handful of upgrades are worth investing in during the beginning chapters, though.
Review: South of Midnight
Compulsion Games deliver a fresh new world and intriguing story we won’t soon forget.
Accumulating enough upgrade points, otherwise known as Floofs, is straightforward enough. All you’ll have to worry about is whichupgradesto focus on first. At these early stages, you’ll want to have just enough to make learning the combat a breeze.

7Stigma Bane
Boost Your Damage
One of the best early upgrades you’ll get in South of Midnight is Stigma Bane. Under the Weave tree, Stigma Bane is your go-to for increasing damage against enemies already damaged by your Weave. As these enemies are already temporarily stunned from the Weave, you’ll have more than enough time to land a few more blows with boosted damage.
In fact, you may even take out some lesser enemies quicker by using this ability. For those tougher fights, it’ll ensure that Hazel can chip away at an enemy’s health without risking herself even if only for a short time.

6Amplified Rend
Attack at a Distance
Sometimes you simply don’t want to get too close to enemies to hurt them. Thankfully, a solid early upgrade that’ll help Hazel out of tricky situations is Amplified Rend. It’s used to upgrade your initial ranged attack in the game, so if you want to increase your damage early on, this is where you should spend some of those Floofs.
It acts like a long-range charged attack, widening the AoEandincreasing the damage dealt. This will wind up paying off even more in later chapters where a hit from aboss or tough enemyis almost a death sentence.

5Aerial Rend
Quickly Interrupt Enemies
An important early upgrade, Aerial Rend allows Hazel to jump up and slam the ground, damaging any nearby enemy. But best of all, it can interrupt an enemy’s attack. To use this move effectively, keep in mind that itonly interrupts normal attacks. So, don’t waste any time whipping this out on special attacks since you’ll only open Hazel up to more damage.
South of Midnight: 8 Tips and Tricks We Wish We Knew Sooner
Whether it’s getting Floofs, mastering Crouton, or not getting blown away by Mushrooms, these South of Midnight tips will always come in handy.
For standard enemy attacks, it’s a great ability to get out of trouble when you’re overwhelmed. Since it’s an AoE, you can both cause damage and stop their animations long enough to run off and catch your breath. Or you can use it to set up combos.

4Crouton Detonation
Time for Explosions
Crouton, our adorable companion, is also deadly when you upgrade accordingly. Crouton Detonation is a wonderfulabilityin South of Midnight because it causes AoE damage. Once his control ends, it will cause a Strand Blast.
With this upgrade, Crouton is no longer just a cute face. Instead, it’s a killing machine and one that serves as the perfect companion for Hazel whether in standard combat or tackling boss battles.

3Cleansing Rend
Powerful AoE Damage
It’s not unheard of to find yourself surrounded by Haints in South of Midnight, which makes Cleansing Rend one of the most useful upgrades to nab as early as possible. You’ll have to go through half of the General upgrade tree, but it’ll be worth all the Floofs. The ability blasts close-ranged enemies with Strands, causing heavy damage.
South of Midnight: Hardest Bosses, Ranked
Not all of them are terrifying. Not all of them are difficult. But each one has something that earns it a spot in South of Midnight.
It’s an excellent ability to earn once you start nearing the mid-stages, so consider this one of the last “early” upgrades to pour your focus into. Honestly, the only con about this upgrade is its long recharge time. But since you’ll dish out heavy damage to multiple enemies ineverydirection, you may not need to use it again right away.
2Crouton Surge
Increase Damage to Controlled Enemies
Following Crouton Detonation, consider also getting Crouton Surge as soon as possible. Crouton already puts in great work on his own, and with this upgrade, you’ll increase the damage on enemies he’s controlling.
You won’t be able to get this one until Chapter 5. Also, it correlates with Crouton Detonation since you’ll need that first before you can buy Surge. They’ll act as the perfect pair when you’re looking to stack damage.
1Bob and Weave
Get In and Out Safely
Arguably, Bob and Weave is one of the best early upgrades, if not among the best upgrades in general, to get in South of Midnight. Hazel already dodges in the game as it’s the only way to avoid enemy damage. But when you add the Bob and Weave upgrade, you make her moves more seamless.
Now she’ll be able to dodge twice in quick succession and you have an even higher chance of avoiding hits, more so when the enemies start getting a little tougher. And you can even use it to reposition yourself across the battlefield when needed. There’s simply no downside to purchasing this upgrade as early as you can.
