The Embracer Group recently released their Q3 2022 financial report which spilt the beans on new projects in the works under The Lords of the Rings IP. These titles are expected to launch sometime before March 2024.

The report also went over the announced acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises by Freemode. This has in turn garnered more interest for the LOTR IP, not just in-game but across “different media formats”. There is also one film in production as well.

The More The Moria

The report states that there are “five games in production by external partners”. The timeframe for these games are expected to release in the financial year of 2023/24.

Out of the five games, there is a story-driven action/adventureGollumbeing developed by Daedalic Entertainment. This has since been delayed, but was originally supposed to release in 2021, then got pushed toSeptember 2022before being delayed once again to 2023. It follows the tortured character Gollum in a stealth/adventure setting. Now it looks to be releasing in Spring/Summer, with more news expected at Nacon Connect this March.

The other title currently in development is by the studio Free Range Games, working on The Lords of the Rings: Return to Moria. This title is a survival game following the dwarves on an all-new adventure. It’s set in the Fourth Era of Middle-earth. The game sets to feature exploration, survival mechanics, underground regions and co-op support of up to eight players. Return to Moria is expected to come out sometime in 2023 for PC via the Epic Games Store.

While platforms are also still mysterious, these games could also include mobile titles as well, such asThe Lords of the Ring: Heroes of Middle-earth. Described as a “collectible role-playing game” by EA. There is also the currently untitled game under Weta Workshop, the same digital effects studio that worked on the Peter Jackson films. This is currently slated for the fiscal year of 2024.

Much That Was Once is Lost

It’s a wonder if any of them may fill the MMO-shaped hole that was left by the cancellation ofAmazon’s MMORPG. This project was supposed to give players a AAA experience but ended up being scrapped after the partnership with Tencent fell through. A fresh take on an online game with modern graphics could have really been something.

With the success of such magical titles as the open-world RPGHogwarts Legacy, it would be great to see a similar scope set in the LOTR universe. What kind of LOTR games do you hope for? Let us know in the comments below.
