Sony today announced that starting tomorrow, August 21, all PS5 models will be subject to a $50 price increase in the United States.

After months of hand-wringing and wondering what will happen with PlayStation pricing, Sony hasconfirmeda price hike for all three PS5 models. Starting on August 21, the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, and PS5 Pro will cost $50 more in the United States. In making this decision, Sony cited the “challenging economic environment,” most likely caused by strict tariffs placed on various countries by US President Donald Trump. The price increase brings the base PS5 model in line with Xbox Series X digital edition, though it still remains cheaper than the Xbox Series X model with a disc-drive.

It’s not just Sony

Sony and the PS5 are the latest casualties brought on by the “challenging economic environment.” In fact, it was clear that the Japanese hardware manufacturer was attempting every trick in the book to avoid raising prices in the US. Back in April, Sony actually raised the price of the PS5 across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand to help offset the tariffs in the US.

Both Microsoft and Nintendo have also responded to tariffs by increasing prices on their hardware. Microsoft increased the prices of all Xbox Series X|S models by varying amounts, the most eye-watering price being the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition Xbox Series X at $729.99. However, unlike Sony, Microsoft opted to increase the prices on ther wireless controllers and headsets. Nintendo, on the other hand, hasn’t increased the price of the Nintendo Switch 2, though they have signalled an openness to in the future should conditions not improve. However, to offset this, they did increase the cost of every Switch 2 accessory. On top of that, two weeks ago they also announced price increases for all Switch 1 models, Joy-Cons, and Alarmo.

We’ll let you know should Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo make any additional pricing changes to their hardware.
