Just one week after directorTim Millerleft his highly-anticipated sequelDeadpool 2, the filmmaker has found his next project. Today we have word thatTim Millerhas signed on to develop and executive produce Sony Pictures’Sonic the Hedgehogmovie. The project will mark quite the drastic departure from the R-ratedDeadpool, withSonic the Hedgehogbeing crafted as a live-action/CGI hybrid.
The Hollywood Reporterreveals thatTim Millerwill develop the project with his longtime Blur Studios partnerJeff Fowler, who will make hisdirectorial debutwith the project.Neal Moritzis also attached to produce this video game adaptation, withPatrick CaseyandJosh Miller(Golan the Insatiable) writing the script. Sony Pictures and SEGA first announced thisvideo gameadaptation back in June 2014, whenEvan SusserandVan Robichauxwere originally tapped to write the screenplay. The initial announcement revealed this adaptation will try to “capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit,” while bringing back a number of iconic characters from the game franchise, such as Dr. Eggman. For more than two decades, Sonic has been one of the world’s biggest gaming icons and a $1 billion franchise with more than 140 million games sold.
The last we heard about thisSonic moviewas in February, when Sega Sammy Group CEOHajime Satomiconfirmed that theSonic the Hedgehogmovie is being planned for a 2018 release date. While this will be the first time this iconic character will be featured on the big screen, Sonic has been featured on the small screen before.The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehogdebuted in 1993, which starredJaleel White(Family Matters) voicing the title character.
Sony Pictures and Marza Animation Planet, aCG animationfilm production company of the Sega Sammy Group, will be the production titles behind the movie. Marza’sTakeshi ItoandMie Onishiwill produce alongsideNeal Moritz.Tim Millerwill executive produce alongsideToby Ascher, withDmitri JohnsonandDan Jevonsof DJ2 Entertainment serving as co-producers.
