The Gunlance is the explosive loud cousin of theLanceand much like it, the Gunlance boasts impressive defense with even more range. The Gunlance is the perfect weapon for hunters who are looking for something with a bit of boom while having a solid defense. It is both beginner-friendly and the new additions will make the gunlance feel better in the hands of veteran bombardiers.
Monster Hunter Wilds Gunlance Combos
Wyrmstake Cannon Combo
This basic combo will perform two thrusts, followed by a wide sweep and chains into aWyrmstake Cannon.
The second combo will start with a shelling into a full finisher with full Multi Wyrmstake Full Blast. This is a stronger combo for dealing damage but it can take some time to pull off the whole chain and is more useful with larger windows for dealing damage.
The third combo starts with a rising slash and chains into a burst fire, and this is a faster combo useful when you have a smaller window of attack.
Monster Hunter Wilds Gunlance Moveset & Changes
The Gunlance has received some massive changes in Monster Hunter Wilds and dramatic improvements have been made to the feel of using it. Gone are its clunky tank-like days and the overall flow feels much improved in this latest iteration.
Shelling Attacks
While Shelling Attacks by themselves are not super flashy, they are a decent source of sustained damage. With the change in Monster Hunter Wilds removing the sharpness drain from shelling with the Gunlance, you can have more uptime dealing damage to monsters before needing to Sharpen your Gunlance. Another welcome change in Wilds is that you can now move between each Shell, making it easier to reposition and combo into other moves. You can also hold down the Shelling button to charge up your shelling until the amount of Shells you want to use has been loaded up. This increases your shell damage and is a reliable way to quickly fill up your Wyvern fire gauge.
With the addition of the Perfect Guard in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Gunlance’s defensive capabilities received some improvements. The Gunlance now has the added ability to Perfect Guard while reloading. What this means is, it makes it easier to flow into a combo after reloading when you do a Perfect Guard, such as going into anOverhead Slam-Y (Xbox) or Triangle (Playstation) and into a Burst Fire -B (Xbox) or Circle (Playstation). Perfect Guarding and guarding will trigger a Power Clash more often and winning a Clash will shoot all of your shells dealing massive damage. You can then follow-up with aWrymstake fullblast-Y + B (Xbox) or Triangle + Circle (Playstation)for even more damage if you combo into it a Moving Wide Sweep after the shelling.
The Moving Wide Sweep is a new tool made available to the Gunlance in Wilds and it has various powerful follow-up options such as theWyrmstake FullblastorWyvern Fire blast. These can be easily achieved with either a quick shelling or a quick overhead smash into the sweep followed by the Wyrmstake or Wyvern fire.
Multi-Wyrmstake Full Blast
TheMulti-Wyrmstake Full Blast-Y or B (Xbox) or Triangle or Circle (Playstation)has some hidden mechanics that are easily missed. The blast actually ends with a guard point, meaning you may continue to be aggressive and press the attack. Even though it expends all your shells, you can quickly reload during the move to reload all your shells.
Wyvern’s Fire Blast
TheWyvern’s Fire Blast:RT + Y + B (Xbox) or R2 + Triangle + Circle (Playstation)is the signature attack move of the Gunlance in Monster Hunter Wilds, but it has been updated with some changes. You are now able to store two ofWyvern’s Fire Blastsand the charges can be recovered by attacking. Shelling also recovers a greater amount of theWyvern’s Fire Chargeand can be used for some quick recovery. In Wilds, the attack also has a longer reach as well as having two different types that can be performed. The first is the standard charge and the second one being a quick variation that can be performed as a follow-up stun action after some actions with the most common being, the Perfect Guard or the Full Burst.
With the addition of focus mode in Monster Hunter Wilds, the Gunlance’s focus strike, calledDrake Auger-While in Focus mode RB (Xbox) or R1 (Playstation)is a thrusting attack that turns your gunlance into a drill, doing continuous damage and ending with aWyrmstake Cannon. The hunter can also endDrake Augerearly and go into theWyrmstake Cannonfaster.
Shell Types
Different Shelling types make a return for the Gunlance in Monster Hunter Wilds and are similar to previous games in the series. Different Gunlances will have different shelling types and power.
There are three different shelling types of Normal, Wide and Long, with the wide type having a short range but having a greater area of effect like a shotgun, and the Long type having a slightly longer range compared to the Normal shelling type.
Shells also come in three different power variations: Normal, Slightly Weak and Slightly Strong which determines how much damage they do.
Different gunlances also come with different amounts of Shells before needing to reload and it will vary from Gunlance to Gunlance. But generally, the Gunlances with Wide type of shells will have only two shots before a reload is needed while the Normal and Long types will have three Shells. Some Gunlances with higher power Shells will be able to fire six shells before needing a reload.

With the addition of theSeikretand the ability to do dismount jumping attacks, it is easier for Gunlance users to mount monsters and topple monsters compared to previous games.
Final Tips
The Gunlance has excellent blocking capabilities because it is one of the two weapons with the strongest block in the game. With the addition of the perfect guard, learning the timing of your guards and perfect guards and triggering power clashes are now more important than ever to help you find success using this weapon.
Even though the Gunlance has a thrust attack like the lance, it does not have access to the same counter strike options. Instead, the attack options it offers are a little slower but can pack more punch if used at the correct timing. Another thing to note is that the Gunlance does not have power guard making it just a little bit less in terms of defense than the Lance.
The gunlance excels at breaking parts except for the tail as it only deals minimal sever damage. So, you generally want to position yourself at the head or the body of monster to break the parts.
The gunlance is still one of the slower weapons to use in the game thus, when dealing with huge and powerful attacks from monsters, sheathing the weapon and dodging out of the way is the best option especially since the Gunlance does not have power guard.
Secondary Weapons
As a gunlance user looking for a secondary weapon with a similar playstyle, the weapon of choice would be the Lance. The lance will provide a good alternative for server damage to the gunlance and is very useful in getting those tail cuts.
If you are looking for something more mobile and versatile to complement your Gunlance, the Charge Blade and the Sword and Shield are good options since both will still provide you with guard capabilities with the chance to do a decent amount of damage.
