Whenever you enter a new dungeon or are in the vast world ofClair Obscur: Expedition 33, you don’t know what you’ll expect. Sometimes they’re a single small area with a musical record for you to collect, other times they’re a lengthy dungeon that will reward you with various new Pictos and weapons to help you on the adventure. For The Canvas, this floating island holds a lot more secrets than you might think, despite only being a location that will take less than a minute to explore.

The Canvas
The first stop you will be making is The Canvas. You will need to obtainEsquie’s ability to fly, and, thankfully, you should be pretty close to the location. This occurs near the end of the game, at thebeginning of Act III, upon the big story revelation regarding Maelle. The Canvas is located on a small island in the sky that’s justsouthwest of the Monolithwhere The Paintress was located.
Once you get up there, enter the small area to find it fairly barren. It is a visual spectacle, though, as there are numerous painted tornadoes spiraling around with what looks like unfinished painted humans and a spectacular background. In the middle of the area, though, is the most important part, there is a portrait of Renoir’s family. Remove it from the frame, and you will obtain the Manor Family Canvas, described as “a canvas portrait of the Dessendre family.”
What to do with the Dessendre Family Portrait?
Now that you have the family portrait, what do you do with it? This is certainly a unique item, especially considering where you obtained it, but what you’re supposed to do with it is a mystery. Thankfully, we have the answer.
The title of the Canvas is in the name itself:Manor Family Canvas. The Manor is the important part, so it’s time to head back to the Manor where you initially reunited with Maelle at the beginning of the game. The easiest way to get there is to headsouth of The Forgotten Battlefieldto an island that houses a door to the manor. It’s the easiest to remember, but you can also enter thebackside of Old Luminereas there’s an entrance to the right in the garden.
Once back, head to the main hall with the front door and head up the staircase. Look to the right after going up the first set of stairs to find an empty frame. Interact with it and place theManor Family Canvason it.
Doing this will unlock the last door in the manor: the atelier. Head into the dining room and in the back will be the newly opened door. There is a journal to collect to shed a little bit more light on the situation in the world, along with a new outfit for Maelle.
