The Mountaincleaver is an essential item to reach Baramos’s Lair inDragon Quest III HD-2D Remake. It is a legendary sword that is said to be able to cleave mountains, but getting access to it isn’t easy.

Calling this a guide to getting the Mountaincleaver is incomplete, as it really is a guide that will lead the player through the necessary steps of getting Ra’s Mirror, the Mod Rod, the Boatman’s Bone and the Lover’s Locket before actually getting the Mountaincleaver. There are many steps necessary to get the Mountaincleaver, and this guide is going to start with Ra’s Mirror.

Review: Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake

Is HD-2D the key to revitalize Dragon Quest III or should it have stayed in the past?

Ra’s Mirror

Southeast of Grimland sits the Teleportal Shrine in a field of snow. Traveling through the portal on the right will take the party to the Wayfarer’s Chapel on an island that is inaccessible by boat due to the surrounding mountains. Head west to the kingdom of Manoza. The castle isn’t accessible through the front, so the party will need to sneak up the right-hand side of the castle and get in through the servants' entrance.

The player can sneak in at night if they want to snoop around the castle, but for quest purposes they need to sneak in during the day, see the king and get thrown in jail. Luckily for the hero, these are the dumbest prison guards in the world as they let the party keep all their equipment, including the ultimate key. Previous versions of Dragon Quest III made the player sneak out by avoiding patrolling guards, but in the remake, the party can just waltz out of their cell. During the exit, they find the real king in a cell, who informs them of where they need to go to stop the impostor king. After speaking to the real king, continue the path out of prison and pop out in the graveyard.

After the jailbreak, the party needs to leave Manoza and travel to Manoza Cave to the southeast. Travel to the first staircase down into the cave, and after taking the stairs down there will be a pit nearby. Jump down the pit and Ra’s Mirror will be in a treasure chest. The party can nowZoom back to Manoza, or they can continue exploring the cave for other treasures and do some level grinding.

Back at Manoza, use any method to make it nighttime andsneak into Manoza castle through the servants' entrance. The party will need to go up into one of the towers and jump down to the roof to make your way into the king’s room. Use Ra’s Mirror on the sleeping king, which turns out to be the Boss Troll. This fight isn’t terribly difficult, but spells such as Oomph, Kasap, and Kabuff can make it a lot easier. Depending on party formation, Monster Pile-On and Multifists are also useful. After this troll is shown who’s the boss, the hero takes possession of the Mod Rod.

Now that the Mod Rod is in the player’s possession, it is time to return it to the old man in the house at Grimland. Before doing so, you can have some fun turning the party into different characters, such as Slimes. The party can also return to Faerie Village, use the Mod Rod to turn into some dwarfs and take advantage of the shopkeeper being willing to sell to them while in their dwarven disguise.

Now that some fun has been had, return the Mod Rod to the man in Grimland. He will give you the Boatman’s Bone, which makes the Ghost Ship appear.

Lover’s Locket

Unlike previous versions of Dragon Quest III where the Boatman’s Bone indicates how far away the Ghost Ship is from the present location, the Ghost Ship now just appeared on the map and was aimlessly floating around in the waters south of Romaria. It’s worth thoroughly exploring the Ghost Ship, but for this objective head to the lower deck and find the Lover’s Locket in the southern part.

Now that the Lover’s Locket is in hand, return (or go for the first time, however you’ve been playing) to Oliva’s Promontory, which is northeast of Romaria. Passing through Oliva’s Promontory was impossible before, as the mournful wails of Olivia’s ghost turned all approaching ships way. With the Lover’s Locket in hand, Olivia is reunited with her lost lover. Now at peace, ships may now pass through.

Shrine of Shackles

The Shrine of Shackles is the next destination, which seems to be an ocean prison. There are a few other useful items in here, but for the Mountaincleaver, go to the bottom cells. Go to the left cell first to get some more of the newly expanded story, and then go to the right cell for the Mountaincleaver.

With the Mountaincleaver in hand, the player is now much closer to the final confrontation with Baramos. There is a volcano south of Asham that can be reached by sailing. This is the next location of the next objective.
