Assassin’s Creed Shadows seems to be off to a stellar start, according to the latest data from Ubisoft. Having only been released in the past few days, Shadows is set to be one of the series' best titles in terms of revenue at its current pace. As a launch title, Shadows sales are only second to Assassin’s Creed Valhalla – itself Ubisoft’s second best-selling title in the company’s history. This is despite Shadows having been delayed twice since its initial release date of November 15 of last year, which is generally a more profitable time for video games.

Shadows May Be The Spark Ubisoft Needs

This is fortunate for Ubisoft, given that many of its other recent releases have been underperforming. It’s gotten to the point where the company may still be bought out by Tencent or at least take on some other venture with the tech giant. While Shadows may not dig Ubisoft out of the hole they’ve gotten themselves into, it’s still a good step in the right direction. Only time will tell if they’ll be able to replicate this level of success with their future titles.

Shadows Under The Spotlight

As for why Shadows is doing so well, there are a couple of reasons that may have contributed to the game’s high sales.Being the first title in the series to release on Steam day one is a big boon. Previous entries had only been available on less-popular launchers initially. This change saw PC players being a larger chunk of Shadows' unique player count, which is consistent with the performance of other franchises dropping on Steam day one.

Unlike Assassin’s Creed previous entry, Mirage, Shadows embraces the modern RPG era of the franchise. While this aspect has split opinions on it within the fanbase, Shadows does take advantage of it by taking the series to a new and exciting setting in Japan. This was a similar benefit seen in the likes of Valhalla and Odyssey, which helped renew interest in the franchise for players who had moved past the series for one reason or another. The setting also contributed to fervent discussion about the new game on social media.

For better or for worse, Shadows is a hot talking point in terms of representation, historical accuracy and cultural understanding. Some might say there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but it’s doubtful this is the kind of attention Ubisoft planned for the game. The silver lining, however, is that it does make players want to check out the game for themselves to see if the discourse is even warranted. For the first game in the series planned for the ninth generation of consoles, you could have a worse start.
