Some months since the previous Alpha test, the team behind 2XKO have revealed their latest plans for the League of Legends fighter. 2XKO, formerly known as Project L, has had a developmental cycle that’s been going on for a couple of years now. This has seen the game go through a complete aesthetic overhaul since its first conception, and numerous changes to its controls and gameplay. Now it seems the developers have found their footing and will be aiming to release the game as soon as possible – namely within the next year or so.

League of Legends Trading Card Game Coming in 2025

Hot off the heels of Arcane Season 2, a League of Legends trading card game is getting a worldwide release.

The official 2XKO YouTube channel recently uploaded an hour-long video detailing what’s coming up next, including new gameplay featuring the character Jinx.

Don’t Jinx It Just Yet

Jinx is one of the more recognizable characters from League of Legends, being a popular champion in her own right and also one of the main characters in the Netflix Arcane series. Her kit makes her a natural fit to be a zoning character in 2XKO, which means playing from a long distance with various gadgets and other projectiles. Considering that Jinx was first seen in the official announcement trailer for the game multiple years ago, this has been a long time coming. Jinx will be playable in the next Alpha, which is set to take place next month over the course of two days.

For those who have been following every update, the word “Finally” probably comes to mind. While everything seems to be all coming together, there is a caveat to this. Lead developers have stated in recent interviews, and the official 2XKO discord, that the game only has three more characters to reveal before launch. That means the initial roster will only feature ten characters in total, which would already be seen as a small size in a normal fighting game. For a 2v2 tag team game in the same ilk as Marvel Vs. Capcom series, some would say it’s downright puny.

Less Of A League, More Like A Small Club

A few have already voiced their disappointment with this news, who believe that there must be some issues behind the scenes for the game to be in this situation. With how long it took for Jinx to be fully implemented, it seems that ten characters is still a tall order for the development team. Considering the source material is quite proud of having close to 200 playable characters, most fans were hopeful that there would at least be 20+ champions to choose from once 2XKO was officially out. At the current pace, that might be a ways away.

From a positive perspective, 2XKO will be a rarity among fighting games, being a Free-To-Play live service title. That means the rollout of future characters could benefit with seasonal updates. As a competitive title, the game will have extra support and promotion given its continuous appearance at popular fighting game tournaments. While the wait has made some lose interest, the unique aspect of being able to play as a tag team with a friend has impressed players. Whether that’s enough to keep people around in the long run will remain to be seen.
